Social media influencers play a significant role in raising fashion consciousness and promoting mainstream thrifting. However, with the increase in social media platforms morphing to include e-commerce features such as TikTok shop, there has been considerable growth in covert affiliation and advertisement of fast fashion brands like Amazon and Shein. This fast fashion infiltration has resulted in people influencing the “thrift” style but achieving it through purchasing from unsustainable fast fashion brands.

Researching existing thrifting platforms it was discovered that all mainstream applications are resale platforms where the primary form of engagement revolves around purchasing and selling clothes. Resale platforms are beneficial to the community because they provide an online platform for people to thrift. However, exploring existing thrifting platforms highlighted the need for a space online where the primary focus is to buy less and wear more.
