Day Two

Friday 9th of August, 9:00am to 6:00pm

I spent Day Two of my internship researching and analysing common user interactions and user flows on estliving.com.

The est living website was completely redesigned and relaunched in February 2024, as expected there was a change in user behaviour. Since the relaunch est living has been closely monitoring the site analytics. Overtime the user data has returned to near pre-launch there are still some areas of the site that users are not interaction with at the same frequency.

Lucky Orange is a platform that captures user sessions on estliving.com. Lucky Orange and Google Analytics for the site revealed that a specific area that is causing a change in user interaction and event numbers is the introduction of the hamburger menu. From my own experience, I find the full-page hamburger menu disruptive to the experience, and the granular detail of pages and categories in the menu requires too many clicks to reach a desired destination.

I ended the day with a meeting with Miffy and Jack, during which we discussed solutions to improve navigation on the site. In this meeting, we discussed implementing a second horizontal navigation bar in the site header. This navigation bar will contain the est living content pillars, enabling users to access the content more efficiently. We also discussed changing the menu icon to the word menu to test if this will help to increase the use of this element. Finally, Miffy and I defined my roles and approach moving forward.

My Roles

Researching

  • User design principles to identify and research problems with the current est living Hamburger Menu to find solutions that will enhance the user experience.

User Testing

  • Conducting various user tests for design problems and analysing test data to find redesign solutions.

Designing Solutions

  • Applying primary and secondary research to generate ideas to solve for problems with the current est living website.

Redesigning the Mega Menu

  • Creating prototypes of the redesign solutions. Using the prototypes to re-test users and evaluate the efficacy of the redesign.
